January 2023

Discipline is the Answer.

The shortcut is a lie. The hack doesn’t get you there. And if you want to take the easy road, it won’t take you to where you want to be: Stronger. Smarter. Faster. Healthier. Better. FREE.
— Jocko Willink (Discipline Equals Freedom)

It’s January, most of us are appalled at our nutrition and lifestyle habits from Christmas to New years, and we are ready to make BIG changes. We just got done bingeing Tik Tok and Youtube motivational hype videos, and are ready to hit the gym 10x this week. Fast forward two weeks, and we are bingeing netflix and hitting the fridge 10x per hour. What happened? We relied on motivation, and did not utilize discipline.

To reach goals and overcome obstacles and become the best version of you possible will not happen by itself. It will not happen cutting corners, taking shortcuts, or looking for the easy way. THERE IS NO EASY WAY.

There is only hard work, late nights, early mornings, practice, rehearsal, repetition, study, sweat, blood, toil, frustration, and discipline.

That is not easy to digest in our immediate gratification and short attention span society. We want everything now, and are not willing to put any effort towards receiving it. So if delaying gratification through discipline is the key to achieving my goals, how do I get it? Easy answer, from within.

Relying on external sources of discipline and motivation is a short term strategy. External discipline is neither as strong nor as permanent as self-discipline. And self-discipline, as the term itself implies, comes from you, comes from the Self. More specifically, it comes from your decision to make a mark on the world, to do more, to be more. Self-discipline lurks behind every single one of your choices, should you eat this apple or this chocolate bar. If you repeatedly choose the latter, then blame nobody for your failures: you are not disciplined enough. Discipline is an internal force that you must fuel through consistent action. Every action you take is a vote for the person you wish to become.

As 2023 is upon us, what is something you want to achieve this year? How can you set up your environment to do so? What actions do you have to take daily to progress towards this goal?
