Fight Depression with Movement

Depression is a mental health disorder that is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in daily activities. Depression can affect people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, and it can interfere with a person's ability to function in daily life. Seasonal Depression Syndrome, also known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is a type of depression that is related to changes in seasons. It is a form of major depressive disorder that typically occurs during the fall and winter months when there is less natural sunlight

Long winters, harsh winds, shortened days, work and family stress, and lack of movement can all contribute to SAD. So what can we do about it? Intentionally move consistently with quality.

Exercise has been shown to have a positive effect on reducing symptoms of depression. Here are some ways in which exercise can help fight against SAD:

  • Increases endorphins: Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, which are natural chemicals that help to reduce pain and improve mood.

  • Reduces inflammation: Inflammation in the body has been linked to depression, and exercise can help to reduce inflammation.

  • Improves self-esteem: Exercise can help to improve self-esteem by increasing feelings of accomplishment and confidence.

  • Promotes social interaction: Group exercise can provide social interaction and support, which can help to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.

  • Reduces stress: Exercise can be an effective way to reduce stress, which is a major contributor to depression.

  • Improves sleep: Exercise can improve sleep quality and duration, which is important for overall mental health.

While exercise is not a replacement for other forms of treatment, such as therapy or medication, it can be an effective complement to these treatments in reducing symptoms of depression.
