Leveling Your Health

One of the leading causes of death in the United States is chronic diseases, which is any onset of a long term health condition, usually preventable with diet and exercise. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. Today we will discuss the prevention side of chronic diseases through the lens of our physical movement.

CrossFit Inc. has observed that nearly every valuable health indicator can be measured on a continuum. This continuum has three distinct levels; “sickness, wellness, and fitness.” This continuum is a great tool to observe how healthy or unhealthy an individual may be.

Some of the leading indicators are blood pressure, resting heart rate, body fat percentage, bone density, cholesterol levels, muscle mass, etc. The “healthiest” will have all of these markers trending in the direction of “fitness”. Ultimately our goal at CrossFit 307 is to enhance all aspects of our health throughout our life.

“Done right, fitness provides a great margin against the ravages of time and disease.”
-Greg Glassman

So how can we move from sickness to wellness to fitness?
Short answer: move often, eat well, and sleep a lot.

Long answer: Improve mechanics, consistency, and intensity of the 10 physical skills of fitness. Which are: cardiorespiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.

This is the heart of the programming at 307, to deepen your ability in all 10 skills while simultaneously having the best hour of your day.

We can measure and “level” our fitness by tracking and improving our capacity over time in all of the skills above. Benchmark workouts and strength tests are great examples of how we achieve this currently. Each color or level past white (in the image below) is one step away from chronic disease, and one step closer to optimal performance.

What color are you on the “health spectrum” below?
What areas in your life do you need to move from sickness to wellness in?
